Italian journalist Cecilia Sala arrested in Iran on December 19 is on her way to Italy, according to an official statement published by the Italian Prime Minister’s office.

The 29-year-old is currently on a plane heading back to her home country after spending time in a cell at Evin Prison in Tehran.

Cecilia Sala went to Iran to cover the recent demonstrations and the social tensions that have shaken the country for several months. The Iranian authorities justified her arrest by explaining that she had “broken the laws” during this professional stay.

According to this press release, she was released thanks to “intensive diplomatic efforts led by the Italian government in collaboration with international partners”.
