Snow will fall in the region! As the snow cover can reach up to 10 cm in places, Météo France has placed the Somme, Pas-de-Calais and the North on orange Snow/Ice alert. Indeed, a disturbance is arriving in Hauts-de-France leading to an air mass conflict. Rain will turn to snow this afternoon and may stick to the ground. Whether on foot, on two wheels, by car, the greatest caution is recommended and this morning, we will explain to you.

It is soft and humid air that the disturbance of the day brings. If this morning the sky is cloudy, the first rains will come from the south at the end of the morning. Low intensity at first, they announce a more complicated weather situation for the afternoon and the following night. Also watch out for slippery roads in the early morning due to the refreezing of yesterday’s precipitation, but also due to the presence of frequent hoar frosts. As for the wind oriented to the southeast, it is weak to moderate.
Gradually this afternoon the disruption will increase across all of our departments. The rain will turn to snow by isothermal phenomenon (warm, humid air precipitating on a cold mass of air on the ground) and the flakes will fall until the evening. In terms of snow accumulation, the latest estimates give us 5 to 10 cm north of a Rouen/Laon line, 3 to 5 cm south of this line, while in the far north (wide coastal strip) the accumulation should be 1 to 3 cm. At the same time, rain accumulations will need to be monitored (rain which will fall before and after the snow). Needless to say, the snow will stick to the ground because of this isothermal phenomenon and that slippery phenomena will be numerous next night and tomorrow morning! The easterly wind will strengthen at the end of the afternoon on the coast and will blow in gusts of around 50 to 60 km/h.
From -1 to 2°C at daybreak. This is why the precipitation that fell yesterday can freeze and make the roads slippery. Likewise, there are many white frosts this morning. Caution !
At the best of the day, don’t count on more than 2 to 5°C. The feeling will undoubtedly be even cooler because of the snow.
And for the rest ?
THURSDAY : Next night, and more particularly in the second part of the night, we will certainly see notable snowfall in the North, Pas-de-Calais and even the north of Picardy. These snowy precipitations can fall until the end of the morning, the disturbance then evacuating from the south-east. We will therefore particularly monitor the condition of the roads and sidewalks due to refreezing phenomena. Then the weather will become dry again and we will probably be able to see some sunshine again. Minimums of -2°C to 1°C, maximums of 1 to 4°C.
Friday : The roads will once again be frozen to start the day. As for the sky, if the clouds prevail, we should have dry weather. The sky will become cloudy at the end of the day, which will cause reduced visibility the following night (freezing fog possible). The minimums will be stationary (from -2 to 1°C, the maximums from 0 to 3°C inland, 4 to 5°C on the seafront).
SATURDAY : It’s going to be cold on Saturday! The minimums will go down another notch (-3 to 0°C). You will therefore need to remain vigilant when traveling with slippery roads but also reduced visibility, which can often be icy. In the afternoon, the thermometers will painfully reach 2 to 4°C. As for the sky, it will be changeable with clearings developing mainly over the southern half of the region.
Today, despite a slight increase in pollutant concentrations linked to weather conditions less favorable to dispersion, the index will remain average across the entire region, ATMO Hauts-de-France informs us.
“Saint Lucian time, dog time” is the saying of the day. It seems to be relevant today. Have a nice day and don’t forget to celebrate Alix tomorrow.
