What is this new nugget from Sweden?

This new series promises to be exciting! Crime at the root has just been released on Netflix and something tells us that this detective series from Sweden is going to cause a sensation.

With its five episodes, this mini-series, which can be watched in a single day, risks getting people talking! Crime at the root (The breakthrough) is released this Tuesday, January 7 on Netflix and is among the many new releases joining the streaming platform’s catalog this month. Based on the book The Breakthrough : How the genealogist solved the double murder in Linköping by Anna Bodin and Peter Sjölund, the detective series tells how a long-term investigation into a double homicide unsolved since 2004 finally came to fruition after almost sixteen years thanks to the unprecedented collaboration between a police officer and a genealogist. John and Per team up to solve Sweden’s second biggest murder case. This unexpected alliance will be fruitful since it will lead to the capture of the murderer.

Crime at the root : a detective series that stands out

In addition to its captivating plot, Crime at the root is also interested in how an unsolved crime affects an entire society and what happens to the people who remain unanswered to the questions “Who?” and “Why?”. Unlike many detective series, Crime at the Root is here more interested in the victims and the investigation rather than the culprits. The two main roles are played by Mattias Nordkvist, who plays the genealogist, and Peter Eggers, who plays the policeman. These are two actors known to Swedish viewers just like the rest of the cast: Annika Hallin, Baxter Renman, Helen Al-Janabi, and Lucas Grimstedt.

Crime at the root : a true story that shocked Sweden

The case that inspires this series is one of the most significant for the Swedes. In October 2004, Anna-Lena Svensson, 56, was stabbed to death in Linköping. Shortly before her, an 8-year-old boy, Mohammed Ammouri, was killed by the same person. The case remained unsolved for more than fifteen years and the FBI was even brought into the investigation to try to apprehend the culprit. DNA matching the suspect in a double murder will finally be found on an online genealogy site.
