League Cup: Arsenal in very bad shape

For Arsenal, the year 2025 has not really started under the best auspices. They certainly won against Brentford on New Year’s Day, but this week is rather painful. After dropping points in the Premier League last weekend, he also had an embarrassing night in the League Cup.

On Saturday, the Gunners had already had to settle for a draw against Brighton, which forced them to lose ground on leader Liverpool. Today, they also suffered setbacks in the League Cup. Arsenal are not eliminated yet, but qualification will be very difficult.

End of a streak of 13 matches without defeat

Indeed, in the first leg of the semi-final, they lost 0-2 against Newcastle United in their own stadium. The Magpies thus ended a series of thirteen matches without defeat for Arsenal.

With Leandro Trossard in the starting team, Arsenal started well. Martinelli accidentally hit the post and the goal suddenly fell to the other side. In-form man Alexander Isak, who has scored seven straight Premier League appearances, continued his streak in the League Cup.

Isak and Gordon shine

A few minutes before half-time, Arsenal suddenly had to chase the ball and, at the start of the second half, they suffered another blow. Raya managed to deflect a shot from Isak, but Gordon was in the right place for the rebound to make it 0-2.

After that, Arsenal went desperate for a goal, but Newcastle held on. As a result, on February 5, at their own St James’ Park, they will attempt to cross the line with a double lead and reach the League Cup final for the first time since 1976.
