LONDON – Tottenham has activated the option allowing it to extend its captain and star striker Heung-Min Son until 2026, the English club announced on Tuesday.
The 32-year-old South Korean is the main attraction for ‘Spurs’, for whom he has scored 169 goals in 431 appearances since arriving in 2015 from Leverkusen.
Ange Postecoglou entrusted him with the captain’s armband in the summer of 2023, while its former holder, French goalkeeper Hugo Lloris, was about to leave.
“He has already had an incredible career at this club, a big role over the last ten years,” commented the coach on Tuesday at a press conference, on the eve of the League Cup semi-final first leg against Liverpool.
“The main ambition is to ensure that he ends his career at Tottenham with a title,” added the Australian about his No. 7.
“Sonny”, as he is nicknamed, was notably part of the Champions League finalist team in 2019, beaten by Liverpool.
He also finished as joint top scorer in the English championship at the end of the 2021-2022 financial year with 23 units, tied with Mohamed Salah.
However, he has not won any trophies with Tottenham, whose last title dates back to 2008, in the League Cup.
Since the start of the current season, the South Korean left winger has been less decisive. He has only scored two goals in his last eleven league games and has started some matches on the bench, like Saturday during the 2-1 defeat against Newcastle.
Weakened by numerous injuries, Tottenham occupies twelfth place in the Premier League after suffering ten defeats in twenty matches. The club faces fifth division side Tamworth on Sunday in the FA Cup.
