Nvidia has just filed a patent for a brand new model of augmented reality glasses a patent for a brand new model of augmented reality glasses that removes the usual backlight system and instead uses digital holographic technology. Officially titled “Backlight-free Augmented Reality Digital Holographic Technology” (US20250004275A1), the United States Patent and Trademark Office made the patent public on January 2, 2025.
This invention uses a spatial light modulator combined with ambient light interference to create augmented reality images. Unlike older AR glasses that darken the entire lens, Nvidia’s approach only darkens specific parts of the lens needed for AR content, which could result in better power efficiency and a more comfortable experience for the user.
The spatial light modulator is managed by a neural network-based control system, which ensures sharp and natural virtual images. The overall design aims to solve common problems with current augmented reality glasses while maintaining a similar look and feel to regular glasses.
-The market for augmented reality glasses is booming, and major technology players are increasing their offerings. Meta introduced its Orion glasses last year, and Samsung is expected to unveil its own AR headset at the Galaxy Unpacked event on January 22. Apple, for its part, the AR glasses manufacturer is still working on its AR glasses, which may not arrive on the market for three to five years.
Of course, as is often the case with patents, there is no guarantee that this technology will be commercialized anytime soon. It might need considerable improvement before it’s ready for everyday users.
