Squid Game season 2 is inspired by real life
Season 2 follows the return of Seong Gi-hun, played by Lee Jung-jae, to the competition. After winning the previous edition, the man returns to these deadly games with the aim of dismantling the organization from the inside. Squid Game is a critique of the highly competitive South Korean society that crushes the poor for the benefit of the rich, like everywhere in the world.
In interview for theAFPHwang Dong-hyuk explains that Squid Game is inspired by the precariousness of the contemporary middle class which can fall at any moment : “I wanted to show that in today’s world, any member of the middle class can fall to the bottom of the economic ladder overnight.”
In 2009, the occupation of the Ssangyong factory was marked by violent police repression against workers. The series illustrates these dramatic events: the brutality of social relations and economic inequalities.
The source of inspiration for season 2 of Squid Game therefore add a very deep social dimension. However, the Netflix series wraps it in the entertainment elements that made season 1 a success: deadly games, an exploration of human limits and a scathing critique of modern society.
