Manchester United have faltered under Ruben Amorim, having yet to fully understand their 3-4-3 formation. A disappointing 2-0 home defeat to Newcastle this past Monday marked their fourth consecutive defeat in all competitions and the sixth in their last eight games, leaving them languishing in 14th position in the Premier League.
With Liverpool flying to the top of the table, Sunday’s clash looms as Amorim’s most daunting challenge yet. However, the United boss can at least take solace in the extra preparation time he has enjoyed in this first week without a midweek match since replacing Erik ten Hag in mid-November.
“We had more time to train together, two consecutive days with the team,” observed Amorim. “This could prove beneficial given that we are in a difficult situation after suffering too many defeats. We are about to face the best team in the league right now.”

Regarding the focus of his workouts, Amorim candidly said, “Everything.” He elaborated, addressing the finer aspects of the game: “The transitions, the lack of possession that we showed in the first half of our last match. There was a palpable sense of anxiety and nerves among the players “Set pieces and crosses are crucial; it’s difficult to pinpoint just one area — we’re working on many elements, particularly ball possession and tempo control, which were our priorities this week.”
With the January transfer market now open, it is widely believed that United need to part ways with some players before acquiring new talent. Amorim realizes that many of the solutions to the club’s struggles lie within the existing squad.
“We need time to focus on the fundamentals; that is the only way to go,” he insisted. “Of course, with the transfer market open, we can try to make some adjustments, but Over the next few weeks we will have more training time, which is essential to improve.”

Referring to the current situation, he said, “The environment is undeniably difficult at the moment, given our recent defeats. We have to manage all aspects of our game. Hard work is the answer. We cannot change our last game We can evaluate it and learn, but we have to focus on what lies ahead and work hard throughout the week.”
Historically, United have struggled at Anfield, having failed to win there since 2016 and only finding the net once in their last nine visits, facing heavy defeats as a crushing 7-0 and a 4-0 defeat.

With the two teams moving on divergent trajectories, many are predicting a similar outcome, yet Amorim — who recently saw his side snatch a thrilling 2-1 win over Manchester City — remains hopeful they can take all three points this Sunday.
“In football, anything is possible in a single match,” he asserted. “Although the best teams usually claim victory throughout the season, for now, they can have the advantage, but we can triumph in any match. Our focus must shift away from the context and towards our performance — mastering the fundamentals. We carry the burden of ensuring that we win this match.
