Considered one of the favorites for the title of Rookie of the Year 2025, Jaylen Wells continues to show himself. Last night, the Grizzlies youngster did the job with 30 points and an avalanche of award-winning shots in his team’s defeat in Sacramento.
If Jared McCain had taken the reins in the race for Rookie of the Year, his injury reignited all the suspense around the NBA rookie trophy. What if Jaylen Wells took advantage of this to get his place at the top of the podium? The Grizzlies winger rarely disappoints this season, averaging 11.3 points and 3.2 rebounds in just 25 minutes.
Last night, the player drafted in 39th position had a big break with 30 points scored against the Kings with an 8/9 from a distance that Stephen Curry would not deny. With 27 points in the first 3 quarters, he was a major element of the Memphis match, helping the Grizzlies stay on the heels of Sacramento before money time. Surprisingly, he had nothing to eat during the last act, completely forgotten by his coach and his teammates until a new award-winning shot at the anecdotal buzzer.
This record is obviously diminished by the defeat but this match should remain in the head of Wells, he who as a reminder is a native… of Sacramento. Always nice to shine in front of your loved ones. If he can maintain this shooting quality over time, he should quickly be talked about again and score even more points (literally and figuratively) in the race for ROY 2025.
“i hate to lose, but i’ve been missing a lot of threes lately in the last couple games, so it felt good to get my rhythm back and just knowing that the team still has confidence in me.”
