Cold, but not only that: what’s the weather for the first weekend of the year?

Winter has well and truly fallen on our country: temperatures will plunge into negative temperatures in places.

There will be temporary clear spells on Saturday. As the hours pass, the sky will become very cloudy, but the weather will remain dry. The maxima will oscillate between -1°C in the Ardennes and 2 or 3°C in the plains. The wind, weak to sometimes moderate from the south-southwest, will return to the southeast sector, according to forecasts from the Royal Meteorological Institute (IRM).

This eveningthe sky will be very cloudy everywhere, but the weather will still remain dry. By midnight, an active area of precipitation will arrive from the southwest. The first precipitation will fall as snow before changing to rain. This rain could be freezing, especially in the Ardennes, but possibly also elsewhere. The minimums will be between -4°C in Hautes-Fagnes and 0 or 1°C in the plains. The wind will be moderate from the southeast and will shift to the south by dawn over the southern half of the country. Gusts will often reach 50 km/h, but locally they could reach 60 to 80 km/h.

Sundaythe sky will be very cloudy to overcast with moderate rain. At the start of the morning, there will still be a risk of freezing rain in the eastern cantons or melting snow in the north-east of the country. In the afternoon, precipitation will become rather intermittent. It will be noticeably milder with maximums of 6 or 7°C in the upper Ardennes to 12°C in the west. The wind will be moderate to fairly strong, and quite strong to sometimes strong at sea, from south-southwest, with gusts of 55 to 65 km/h and up to 75 km/h on the Ardennes terrain.
