Hwang Dong-hyuk, the creator of the phenomenon Squid Game on Netflix, returned to the end of season 2, which somewhat divided viewers.
After more than three years of waiting, Squid Game made a high-profile return to Netflix with a season 2 that seems more divisive than the first. Between the very reason for its existence (money), its shorter duration than expected (seven episodes instead of nine) and the necessarily frustrating cliffhanger of the finale, this new burst of episodes is as much under fire from projectors as from critics.
The creator of the series, Hwang Dong-hyuk, however, justified his choice to end the second season in such a brutal way before season 3 which was written at the same time.

SQUID GAME SAISON 2.1
The last episode of season 2 of Squid Game was particularly bloody and heartbreaking. Gi-hun’s (Lee Jung-jae) friend Jung-bae (Lee Seo-hwan) was shot dead in front of his eyes by the Man in Black (Lee Byung-hun) who secretly joined the game and became a friend -friend with the one who swore to stop him. The season thus ends with the cries and despair of the protagonist. held on the ground by the guards after his unfortunate soldiers were almost all killed.
Many questions therefore remain unanswered. What will become of the brave Hyun-ju? And the less brave Kang Dae-ho? Will the Game Master reveal his triple identity? Who is really the sailor who teams up with Hwang Jun-ho? Will the latter one day find the island? Will the game really continue (even if the post-credits scene seems to indicate that it will)? Even if we will not have to wait 3 more years to have the answers, many teeth have gnashed in the face of this non-resolution of the issues.
The creator of the series, Hwang Dong-hyuk, justified Variety the choice to cut this edition of Hunger Games Squid Games in two:
“When I was writing the story for Seasons 2 and 3, it was one long story arc. I originally planned to expand this story to eight or nine episodes, but once the story was finished, it was over ten episodes long, which seemed too long for a single season. So I wanted to get to a certain point where I could wrap up the second season and move on to the third.
When you look at Gi-hun’s story, you see his attempts to stop the game, the first being to hire these mercenaries and set up a whole tracking device, which failed. His second attempt was to try to persuade people to vote so they could leave the game, which also failed. And then the third and final attempt was to unite the players and start the rebellion, but that also failed. »
« All his failures lead to a very serious crisis, that of losing his best friend, Jung-bae, at the hands of the Game Master. And when we think of Gi-hun’s journey, I thought it was the right moment to put an end to this long story. From this point on, in season three, this enormous feeling of guilt and failure weighs heavily on him. How will Gi-hun continue his mission? This is the story we will tell. […] You will therefore find the character at a critical turning point at the start of the third season. Gi-hun will no longer be the man he was in season 2. »
If his decision to leave Gi-hun at this tragic moment is understandable (and ultimately quite common in television or cinema), we wonder what season 3 will look like if there are only three episodes leftas reported by Hwang Dong-hyuk. Perhaps for the sake of consistency these will be cut in half for 30 minute formats, perhaps other episodes have since been written or perhaps Netfix will assume the imbalance this season 2 part 2 unofficial.
For the moment, no date other than a vague “2025” has been communicated, but according to Hwang Dong-hyuk the announcement should not take long.
