The year 2025 will not just be a year of readjustments for electricity. Your gas bills will also undergo some major changes. Between reductions in electricity prices, revision of off-peak hours, possible increases for gas… Here’s what you need to know to better anticipate your energy costs This year.

A drop in electricity prices of 14% in 2025

For the majority of households, the big news of 2025 concerns electricity. From February 1, the regulated electricity tariff (TRVE) will see a reduction of 14%. Although this reduction may seem modest, it nevertheless represents a nice breath of fresh air after several years of increases.

Be careful, because this drop does not mean the absence of other adjustments. THE tariff shield which protected consumers has already disappeared in 2022.

The domestic tax on final electricity consumption (TICFE) will increase slightly to return to its pre-crisis level. The tax increase will not erase the gains from reduction in prices for regulated rate subscribers. But it risks slowing down future increases for those who are on fixed or indexed price contracts.

A new calendar for off-peak hours

Another major change, off-peak hours will also experience an adjustment in 2025. Currently, they allow you to benefit from a advantageous rate over a period of 8 hours per dayoften at night. However, with the rise of solar energy, it becomes necessary to reorganize these time slots to better correspond to periods of high solar production.

From summer 2025, certain off-peak hours will be readjusted to take place in the afternoon. During the summer period, the production of photovoltaic electricity is in fact more abundant.

This change, which will extend until 2027, concerns a measure intended to reduce electricity consumption during peak hours. It will also make it possible to better use solar production capacities. This readjustment could allow you to maximize your savings if you have an “off-peak” subscription.

On the other hand, if you are already a fan of this option, expect a modified distribution.

A rise in gas prices too

While electricity will benefit from reductions and readjustments advantageous for many, the situation for gas seems less favorable. As of January 2025, the gas price will undergo a further increase. The selling price of natural gas will increase from €138.95 to €144.09 per megawatt hour, i.e. increase of 3.7%.

At the same time, the natural gas taxnow called the excise tax on natural gas for fuel use, will continue to increase. In 2025, this tax will increase from €16.37 to €17.16 per megawatt hour.

New adjustments for gas and electricity

It’s not just wholesale prices that influence your bills. Electricity and gas taxes will have an indirect impact on your expenses. For electricity, although tax increases appear to be relatively moderatethey are in addition to wholesale price adjustments and costs linked to the revision of off-peak hours.

For gas, the increase in taxes and wholesale prices will combine with the planned increase in sales prices. Furthermore, the draft finance law for 2025 proposes to harmonize VAT on the supply of electricity and gas, although this measure does not immediately impact consumers.

The objective being to simplify European taxation, these adjustments could offer more transparency and clarity in your energy bills. But for the moment, their consequences still seem limited.
