Chocolate chips inside, a cookie disc placed on top… This pancake, offered by Pétrin Nîmois, near Les Halles, is dedicated to indulgence. It’s on the social networks that Pierre Roussel, the owner of the bakery, came up with the idea: “it’s trendy. For a while now, there have been a lot of pastries with cookies, we thought why not on a pancake. It’s delicious, it’s pretty, you might like it. The goal is to attract as many customers as possible, maybe the grandson will tell his grandmother that he saw that on the networks“.
Tough competition
Because in the merciless world of the galette des rois, you have to be original: “The hardest to beat are the supermarketsespecially the chains. Supermarkets have been offering pancakes since November. We have to differentiate ourselves from others by doing something else.” A cookie pancake is sold for 24 euros, compared to 22 for a classic.
“What’s the point of tradition if we take anything at any time?”
On the customer side, some are rather hostile to the idea: “cookies are not a cake“, annoys a woman from Nîmes. “What good is tradition if we take anything at any time? We can eat cookies all year round, this is the cake”adds another customer.
Others are convinced: “as soon as there is chocolate, I taste it”, smiles Karine, who comes out of the bakery with a cookie pancake in her hand. “I have a teenager and I think he will love it, it’s a change from the ordinary, it will please him“, she adds.
