This Friday, January 3, a 37-year-old man incarcerated in Arles prison took five people hostage for nearly five hours, before finally surrendering to the police. He has since been taken into custody.
For several hours, four members of medical staff and a prison officer from Arles prison, in Bouches-du-Rhône, were held hostage this Friday, January 3, by Irwing S. This inmate, who was in possession of an artisanal peak, could have acted in this way because of a dissatisfaction after a refusal of transfer to another detention center.
But while the latter surrendered to the authorities in the middle of the afternoon, without causing any injuries, the profile of the suspect, who has since been taken into custody, is finally taking shape.
Released in six years
According to Le Parisien, the man comes from the kingdom of Guyana, in South America, and is not French. He was sentenced to 18 years in prison on appeal for rape at gunpoint. He could hope for release in 2031.
To our colleagues, a prison source described the inmate as being “impulsive”, “violent” and who has “problems of violence in detention”. “He was an individual who, through his profile and his past, had shown how dangerous he was”specified the Bouches-du-Rhône police prefect, Pierre-Édouard Colliex.
-For his part, the public prosecutor of Tarascon added that he does not present any “psychiatric profile, there is no psychosis”.
The accused brought before the prosecution on Saturday
Now placed in police custody to learn more about his motivations, Irwing S. “will be referred to the prosecution early Saturday afternoon.” The investigation was entrusted to the Banditry Repression Brigade (BRP).
