Since Friday January 3 at the end of the morning, an inmate with an unstable psychiatric profile threatened four members of the medical staff and a guard at the Arles penitentiary center. The man was holed up in the prison infirmary, where he was receiving treatment after having injured his hand during a fight. A first hostage, a doctor, was released around 3 p.m. before the prisoner finally surrendered.
Earlier, Gérald Darmanin had assured that “all means” were deployed to put an end to the hostage-taking. The Raid as well as the Eris (regional intervention and security teams) and the police services were mobilized.
