THE ESSENTIAL

  • An American study highlights the importance of assessing patients’ physical activity to prevent 19 chronic diseases, including diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
  • Active patients, practicing at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise per week, are less exposed to these risks than inactive patients.
  • The WHO recommends practicing at least 150 to 300 minutes of moderate physical activity or 75 to 150 minutes of intense activity per week.

New proof of the benefits of movement on health and aging. A study carried out by researchers at the University of Iowa, in the United States, highlights the importance for doctors of measuring the physical activity of patients to prevent a number of chronic diseases. Details were published in the journal Preventing Chronic Disease.

A clear link between physical activity and overall health

The team of scientists, led by Lucas Carr, associate professor of health physiology, examined the responses of more than 7,000 patients who completed a questionnaire on their level of physical activity during annual health check-ups, called “Exercise Vital Sign.”

On a tablet, patients were asked the following questions: “How many days per week do you do moderate to vigorous physical activity, such as brisk walking?” (0 to 7 days) and “How many minutes do you practice this activity on average per day?” This rapid process, taking less than 30 seconds, yielded valuable information about patients’ health status.

However, according to the study, patients who practiced at least 150 minutes of moderate-to-intense exercise per week had a significantly reduced risk of developing 19 chronic diseases, such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer and respiratory diseases. On the other hand, those reporting little or no physical activity were much more exposed to these pathologies.

At least 150 minutes of physical activity per week

The researchers recommend that health systems integrate this type of questionnaire into assessments, and that authorities further promote physical activity through sport, leisure or even mobility (walking, cycling, public transport, etc.). .), among others. As a reminder, the World Health Organization recommends practicing at least 150 to 300 minutes of moderate physical activity or 75 to 150 minutes of intense activity per week.
