An inmate held several members of prison staff hostage at central prison for several hours. He finally surrendered without causing any injuries.

A hostage-taking took place this Friday, January 3, at the Arles central house, according to La Provence. An inmate was holding back several members of prison staff. Aged 37, was incarcerated for rape at gunpoint and wishes “change prison center“. He was up for release in 2031 and is known for “significant psychiatric disorders”. He was reported radicalized in 2013, according to La Provence.

The five hostages were released

He first took four members of medical staff and a prison officer hostage using a homemade bladed weapon, according to the Minister of Justice, Gérald Darmanin. A female doctor was freed after a Raid response team arrived at the scene. Around fifteen prison administration agents were also on site to carry out the intervention. The Bouches-du-Rhône police prefect, Pierre-Édouard Colliex and the Tarascon public prosecutor, were also present. “We have mobilized all means to deal with it. I am following the evolution of the situation in real time”assured the Minister of Justice on his X account.

After several hours, the four hostages were finally released and the detainee surrendered to the Raid. “No injuries” were reported, announced the Minister of Justice. Information confirmed by the police headquarters. “Thank you to the prison administration teams and the RAID police officers for their intervention,” Gérald Darmanin also wrote on X.
