The five hostages are employees of the penitentiary center located in the northern industrial zone of the city: four are part of the medical staff, the fifth is a prison guard. They are held back by an inmate with a bladed weapon, holed up in the prison infirmary. According to France Info, the prisoner was in the infirmary after suffering a hand injury during a fight.
The man, born in Guyana, is 37 years old. Known to the courts for multiple offenses, he was sentenced to 18 years in prison for rape at gunpoint. He was reported to have been radicalized in 2013. But according to initial information, the madman took five people hostage in response to his refusal to transfer to another prison.
A “psychiatric profile”
The man would have a “psychiatric profile”. Three months ago, the Force Ouvrière union at the prison warned of the “increasing number of individuals suffering from serious psychiatric problems” within the establishment. The union organization was therefore concerned about “the safety of agents, the care of detainees, and the effectiveness of the systems in place”.
A Raid team (search, assistance, intervention, deterrence), the Eris (regional intervention and security teams) and the police services are mobilized to try to neutralize the detainee. “We have mobilized all means to deal with it. I am following the evolution of the situation in real time,” declared the Minister of Justice, Gérald Darmanin, on X.
