Domenico Tedesco’s position as coach of the Red Devils is weakened after a disappointing year, and speculation about his successor is rife. Former goalkeeper Frank Boeckx, now a consultant, already has a name in mind: Hein Vanhaezebrouck. However, he also expresses a critical reservation about this choice.
According to Boeckx, Vanhaezebrouck, currently free since his departure from La Gantoise, could be an interesting choice. His style of play seems particularly suited to the current needs of the national team. “If Charles De Ketelaere has to perform, then maybe it should be Hein Vanhaezebrouck. He likes to play with Atalanta’s system,” Boeckx said in Het Laatste Nieuws.
The analyst is referring to Vanhaezebrouck’s preference for a dynamic and flexible style of play, which could help young talents like De Ketelaere flourish. This could mark a step towards a revival for the Red Devils, who many believe need a breath of fresh air.
Limited experience
However, Boeckx also highlights an important consideration regarding Vanhaezebrouck’s possible appointment. He points to his limited experience outside Belgium, a factor which can be crucial for a national team. “Hein has only coached in Belgium. Someone like Mark van Bommel, for example, has played for Barcelona, Bayern and Milan. Wouldn’t internationals who play in big clubs be sensitive to this kind of journey? asks Boeckx.
