The Mexican city will not host the event in December which will determine the composition of the group stage of the World Cup.
The countdown to the 2026 World Cup is relentless; 2025 will see the continuation of qualifying for this FIFA World Cup, as well as the draw to establish the group stage in Mexico, the United States and Canada.
However, not all the news is good for Mexico as it heads towards this major international sporting event, as reports reveal that Monterrey will not be the venue for the 2026 World Cup draw.
Alejandro Hütt, head of host city Monterrey, has confirmed that the city will not host the World Cup draw scheduled for this December, despite being one of the finalists. “They won’t give us hosting rights for the draw. FIFA has already informed us and Vancouver that they are going in another direction. It won’t be Monterrey, it won’t be Vancouver; it will surely be another city in the United States that is not a World Cup host.”

“Due to a media and commercial strategy decision by FIFA, when we received this confirmation in writing, it understandably hurt us. We cannot sit here and cry or complain. What’s next? How will we turn around after not being selected to host the draw?”
“We are creating a delegated committee, working groups, and we are aiming to bring an international event in June 2025 called the World Football Summit, which is the most important football industry event in the world, organized by Spaniards,” said Alejandro Hütt during an interview with the media Guadalupe en Mouvement.

Besides Monterrey, the other city ruled out to host the FIFA World Cup draw at the end of this year was Vancouver, Canada, which is also one of the tournament venues, as confirmed Alejandro Hütt.
However, Monterrey remains a host city for the 2026 World Cup with BBVA Stadium as the venue, alongside Guadalajara at Akron Stadium and Mexico City with the renovated Azteca Stadium.
