The rapper will spend a while in the shade.
It is one of the news we could have done without at the end of 2024: Lil Durkstandard bearer of the Chicago rap scene (just like Chief Keef for example) and one of the creators of the original US drill, was arrested and detained for ordering a murder. An arrest which caused quite a stir, since it arrived at the time when another US rap star, Young Thug, was released. We now know a little more about what motivated the arrest, however we will need to know the court’s decision: the trial will ultimately not take place until October.
The detention will be long
It has become something of a custom in the United States, especially regarding cases in which rappers are involved: trials are constantly pushed back to distant dates. We don’t know if it’s just because the courts are overloaded, or if it’s mainly to annoy the rappersbut what is certain is that Young Thug had spent two years in prison before his trial took place. Lil Durk was due to appear before the judges at least in January 2025 but ultimately the trial will not take place until October 14.
It must be said that Lil Durk’s defense team will have a lot to do during this period: the authorities have apparently got their hands on more than 230 Gigabytes of data related to the case. Of the video recordings, surveillance images, voice recordings, and approximately 20,000 report pages. A file which has become “so unusual and so complex that it is not reasonable to expect effective preparation for the entire pre-trial phase, or for the trial itself, within the time limits provided by the Speedy Trial Act”according to the courts.
A trial postponed to October 2025, which means that Lil Durk will therefore have spent a year in detention. We recall that this arrest concerns a murder case, which the rapper is accused of having ordered. A case which could be linked to the assassination of his brother King Von, following a beef with Quando Rondo.
