They are one of those things that change in January 2025. In addition to taking gas and certain social assistance, restaurant vouchers were entitled to a particularly unpopular update at the start of the week. Since January 1, 2025, these checks half-funded by the employer no longer allow you to do your shopping normally in supermarkets. This development had been planned for a long time, but it had been put on hold in recent weeks, while France appointed a new government. It now risks weighing heavily on the budget of 4.5 million French people who use the device daily.
New rules for restaurant tickets
Since its implementation in 2022, the extension of restaurant vouchers to food businesses such as supermarkets has sustainably reduced the monthly bill for French households. Perceived as tax-free salary supplements, they allow employees to reduce lunch-related expenses, but also to do their shopping in most supermarkets in the country.
Despite the decision of certain deputies to extend this extension of use, initially taken at the time of the Covid-19 health crisis, extension of the current provisions could not be implemented in time. For two days, it has been a “back to normal” which corresponds to a look back a little over two years which was put back in place. The rules that were in force before October 2022 will apply again, prohibiting several everyday consumer products from being paid for using a restaurant voucher.
What are the prohibited products?
Concretely, all products which are not directly consumable on site fall outside the scope of restaurant vouchers. This is valid for raw meat and fish, but also most raw products, such as fresh seafood, eggs, oil, butter, sugar, but also pasta and rice For example.
-List of authorized products
- Fruits and vegetables, whether or not they are directly consumable
- Fresh or frozen prepared meals
- Fresh processed fish (surimis, spring rolls, nuggets, brandade, accra, rillettes, etc.)
- Bakery products
- Dairy products
- Catering products
- Snacks, sandwiches, mixed salads
- Soups
- Savory tarts, quiches, pizzas
A temporary decision
Although this decision officially came into force at the start of the year, it could however only be short-lived. Indeed, the two chambers of Parliament do not agree on the timetable for the measure, and the Assembly voted for an extension until the end of 2026. We must therefore expect to see the lines of the text move further more in the days to come.
