Cliftonville mourns loss of Michael Newberry as football takes a step back

The tragic loss of Michael Newberry earlier this week has brought back painful memories for Dean Shiels, who recalls the moment he had to deal with the untimely death of Derry City captain Ryan McBride. Having lived through the emotional turmoil that followed McBride’s death, Shiels understands the extent of the grief that now envelops the Cliftonville community.

As coach of Coleraine, Shiels expressed his condolences and solidarity with those affected by Newberry’s death. “ can wait; it is insignificant at times like this,” he said, acknowledging the difficult road ahead for those connected to Cliftonville. He fondly recalls the profound impact the loss of McBride in 2017 had on his father, then manager of Derry City, a poignant reminder of the weight of such tragedies on footballing families.
