The owners, Pierre Meilheuret et Lucas Piegayhave imagined a surprise that makes you dream: a gold coin worth 290 euros hidden in one of their king cakes.
A golden idea
Like the famous Willy Wonka, Pierre Meilheuret wanted to make an impact with an original initiative. This room, a 10 gold francs struck in 1868 under the Second Empirewas purchased from a local seller. Its placement remains a mystery.
As a precaution, the gold coin will not be cooked with the pancake. It will be inserted after cookingplaced in a plastic container to guarantee food safety and avoid any incidents.
Objective: 2,000 galettes des rois sold
Since taking over Le Pain des Matrus in October 2023, Pierre and Lucas have never stopped looking for ideas to stand out. The “gold coin” operation was thought of as soon as they arrived, but could only see the light of day this year due to the numerous challenges linked to the takeover of the bakery.
The previous year, Le Pain des Matrus had sold nearly 1,800 pancakes to individuals, businesses and through special orders. This year, the objective is ambitious: 2,000 cakes sold.
Despite a inflation which weighs heavily on the sector (with an increase in 30% off the price of butter and almond powder), the bakers have chosen to maintain a reasonable price for their cakes, set at 19,80 €.
A bean for frangipane lovers… and others
For purists, frangipane pancakes remain the preferred choice for hoping to obtain this special bean. However, Pierre and Lucas also offer chocolate pancakes to satisfy all tastes.
An operation that gets people talking
With this unique initiative, Le Pain des Matrus intends to attract attention and build customer loyalty. So, if you are a fan of galette des rois and you dream of winning a gold coin, go to the Le Pain des Matrus bakery. Who knows, maybe you will be the lucky one in this gourmet treasure hunt?
