After five years of absence from social networks, Meghan Markle marks the start of the year 2025 by opening a new personal chapter on Instagram.
The Duchess of Sussex made a notable return to Instagram, creating a new account under the username @meghan on Wednesday, January 1. His first publication, a video filmed by the prince Harry near their home in Montecito, California (United States), shows Meghan Markle dressed in white running on a beach before tracing “2025” in the sand. We hear him laugh before going in front of the camera. Although comments are disabled, the account has attracted more than 100,000 followers in a few hours.
In addition, the profile photo, in black and white, presents the smiling young woman in a white outfit different from that in the video. Although the account has not yet been certified, the former comedian hinted that she would return to the platform, during an interview with The Cut in August 2022. “Want to know a secret? I’m coming back… to Instagram,” she said.
Before her marriage to Prince Harry in 2018, Meghan Markle had three million followers on her personal account and lifestyle blog, “The Tig”. However, she closed her blog in 2017, a few months before her engagement, and deleted her social media pages the following January. “It was a huge adjustment, going from total autonomy to a completely different life,” she said.
A withdrawal from royal functions in 2020
The couple then shared news of their royal duties via the @KensingtonRoyal account, alongside Prince William and Kate Middleton. However, this system required photos to be published via the Royal Rota, an exclusive accreditation system covering all events linked to the British monarchy. Meghan Markle had expressed her disagreement with this practice, wondering why she could not directly share photos of her children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, with her public.
In May 2019, the couple launched a separate account, @SussexRoyal, which broke records by reaching one million followers in just six hours. The account mixed royal work and more personal moments, signed with their official titles. However, after their retirement from royal duties, the page stopped being updated, its last post dating back to March 2020. “Thank you to this community – for the support, inspiration and shared commitment to good in the world. Harry and Meghan,” we can read on the publication. The page remains online, although comments have since been disabled.
Since then, Meghan and Harry have focused on their Archewell organization, which encompasses charitable activities, media productions, and a podcast.
