Gabon's first female participation in the Olympic Games dates back to Los Angeles (United States) in 1984. At this Olympics, there were two of them. Gisèle Ongollo (100 m) and Odette Mistoul (shot put).
Forty years later, this number, for the first time, increased from two to three. Thus, in Paris, during the Olympic Games, which were held from July 26 to August 11, 2024, Gabon was represented on the women's side by Noëlie Lacour (swimming), Emmanuella Atora Eyeghe (taekwondo) and Virginia Aymard (judo). A participation which – unlike athletics, in clear decline – illustrates the progress recorded by national women's sport. Particularly in combat disciplines.
Among the men, Hoye Yenda Moukoula (athletics) and Adam Girard de Langlade Mpali (swimming) were the only Gabonese representatives. In Paris, as was to be expected, our country came back empty-handed, finishing in 84th place out of 206 countries represented.
This ranking was made possible thanks to the only Gabonese victory during these Games. Indeed, in the 50m freestyle, Noëlie Lacour won her “competition” with a time of 27.68. However, insufficient time to reach the semi-final.
The other four competitors were also eliminated in the first round.
