The terrorist trail is now favored. At least 10 people were killed and 30 others injured after a vehicle drove into a crowd in the Vieux Carre, the tourist “French Quarter” of New Orleans, the authorities of the American city announced on Wednesday.
“We are responding to a mass casualty accident involving a vehicle that drove into a crowd on Canal and Bourbon Street. There are 30 injured and ten dead,” the city’s emergency authority initially declared. According to American police, a man driving a pick-up deliberately drove into the crowd, trying to “run over as many people as he could”
“Determined to cause carnage”
The driver “was fiercely determined to cause carnage,” police official Anne Kirkpatrick told the press. At least ten people were killed, according to emergency services.
Emergency services did not specify the time of the incident, but the area was expected to be crowded with people celebrating the New Year in this historic and festive area.
CBS News cites witnesses who say a truck drove into the crowd at “high speed” before its driver jumped out and began firing a gun, prompting a police response.
Two police officers were injured by bullets, according to a police source.
