At least 10 people were killed and 30 others injured when a vehicle drove into a crowd in a tourist area of New Orleans, authorities in the American city announced Wednesday.
“We are responding to a mass casualty accident involving a vehicle that drove into a crowd on Canal and Bourbon Street. There are 30 injured and ten dead,” the city’s emergency authority said in a statement.
Emergency services did not specify the time of the incident, but the area was expected to be crowded with people celebrating New Year's Eve in the historic and festive area known as the French Quarter.
CBS News cites witnesses who say a truck drove into the crowd at “high speed” before its driver jumped out and began firing a gun, prompting a police response.
During a press conference, New Orleans police indicated that the suspect acted intentionally and sought to run over “as many people as possible”.
-The latter also allegedly fired shots at police officers, injuring two of them.
