the essential
The 2024 road safety report is not yet known. The number of victims falls year after year but still remains above more than 3,000 deaths per year.

Will the number of road deaths decrease in 2024? Impossible yet to say because the figures will be communicated in a few weeks. Between January 1, 2024 and November 30, 2024, 2,927 people were killed while driving across , compared to 3,167 people for the whole of 2023.

Over the first eleven months of the year, Road Safety recorded 14,354 serious injuries. In 2023, over the entire year, 15,936 people were seriously injured.

Other data: the number of injury accidents. Aside from January and February 2024, more than 4,000 accidents took place each month throughout France. Unsurprisingly, with the back and forth of summer, the month of July was the most accident-prone.

Three-quarters of those killed and seriously injured are men

In 2023, the highest number of deaths and serious injuries were recorded on roads outside urban areas with 59% of road deaths and 48% of serious injuries. Also that year, men accounted for 78% of driving deaths and 75% of serious injuries. And it is the 18-24 age group that has paid the heaviest price for this sad toll.

The number of road deaths has stagnated at between 3,000 and 4,000 people per year since 2010 in France. The road death toll had fallen below 5,000 deaths per year in 2006. Twenty years earlier, more than 11,000 French people were killed while driving on the road every year.
