The ministries responsible for Energy in Mauritania and Senegal, as well as Petrosen and the Société Mauritanienne des Hydrocarbures (SMH), announced in a joint press release the official opening of the first well of the Grand Tortue Ahmeyim (GTA) project.

This step marks a major milestone in the completion of this project, strengthening the strategic partnership between Mauritania and Senegal, which aspires to play a key role in the regional energy industry.

The GTA project, developed by an association bringing together SMH, Petrosen, bp, and Kosmos Energy, is located on the maritime border between the two countries. Considered one of the largest deepwater gas discoveries in the region, it represents an ambitious cross-border project with significant economic and energy prospects.

The opening of the first well marks the completion of technical operations and paves the way for the commercialization of gas, planned “very soon”, according to the press release.

Birame Souleye Diop, Senegalese Minister of Energy, Oil and Mines, welcomed this progress, presenting that it reflects a “common vision with Mauritania to make the GTA project a model of successful energy collaboration”.

Mohamed Ould Khaled, Mauritanian Minister of Energy and Oil, also highlighted the scope of this partnership: “This exemplary partnership with Senegal demonstrates the capacity of our two countries to achieve all ambitious and sustainable objectives. The energy future of our region looks promising. »
