will your iPhone be compatible with the next update?

The future version of iOS will not be available before the next school year, but we can already find out if our current mobile will be one of the lucky ones.

In the wake of iOS 18 already entirely dedicated to artificial intelligence (especially in the United States for the moment), its successor should naturally continue Apple’s efforts in this area. And, good news, all iPhones already compatible with iOS 18 should also be compatible with iOS 19!

Which iPhones will be able to upgrade to iOS 19?

According to our colleagues at iPhoneSoft, who cite an internal Apple source, all iPhones currently running iOS 18 will be able to upgrade to the next version. In detail, here are the models concerned:

  • iPhone 16, 16 Plus, 16 Pro, 16 Pro Max ;
  • iPhone 15, 15 Plus, 15 Pro, 15 Pro Max ;
  • iPhone 14, 14 Plus, 14 Pro, 14 Pro Max ;
  • iPhone 13, 13 mini, 13 Pro, 13 Pro Max ;
  • iPhone 12, 12 mini, 12 Pro, 12 Pro Max ;
  • iPhone 11, 11 Pro, 11 Pro Max ;
  • iPhone XS, XS Max, XR ;
  • iPhone SE (2e et 3e generation).

Naturally, future iPhone 17s, also expected next September, should be delivered with iOS 19 preinstalled. The fourth generation iPhone SE, which should arrive next spring, will also be part of the lot.

What about iPads then?

Things are a little different when it comes to Apple tablets. According to iPhoneSoft, iPadOS 19 (the version of iOS adapted for tablets) will require at least an A12 chip under the hood. The 7th generation iPads and the 2017 iPad Pro will therefore remain on the sidelines, even if they can still benefit from iPadOS 18 to this day.

The eighth generation iPad, fifth and sixth generation iPad mini, the post-2018 iPad Pro and the third generation iPad Air and beyond will be able to adopt iOS 19.

Among the new features expected with iOS 19, we are focusing in particular on an improvement in the language model (LLM) used by Apple Intelligence (notably for Siri).
