Freezing rain warnings are in effect in most regions of Quebec for Sunday while between 30 and 50 millimeters of rain are expected in some places.
An area of freezing rain will move along the St. Lawrence Valley starting this afternoon, leaving accumulations of 2 to 4 millimeters of ice in its wake, according to Environment Canada.
Freezing drizzle is also forecast throughout the day.
“Surfaces, such as roads, streets, sidewalks and parking lots, could become icy and slippery,” indicates Environment Canada on its website.
Several sectors, including Charlevoix, Quebec and Trois-Rivières, are also subject to a rain warning for next night.
25 to 35 millimeters of rain could then fall in places while accumulations could be greater in the Charlevoix region, where up to 50 millimeters are expected.
“It’s a lot of rain and there’s already a lot of snow on the ground,” explains meteorologist Gilles Brien, in an interview with LCN. We already have 10 centimeters in Montreal and Quebec. With temperatures of 10 degrees and southerly winds on Monday, you are pretty much guaranteed to see a lot of snow melt.”
“There is going to be runoff and still rivers that could show signs of overflowing a little in certain places. That remains to be seen for Monday. Then the cold will set in.”
In Montreal, the mercury will gradually rise from -1 in the morning to reach 8 in the evening.
In Quebec and Trois-Rivières, temperatures varying between -2 and 3 degrees are expected on Sunday.
Precipitation should begin overnight in Saguenay, where the mercury should be around the freezing point.
Be careful on the roads
Given that many Quebecers still have gatherings planned between now and New Year’s Day, caution will be required for motorists.
The spokesperson for the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, Martin Girard, explains that particular care must be taken when traveling from one region to another, given that conditions can change drastically.
“Quebec 511 is a tool that is available to tell you what the condition of the roads is in the region where you are going,” he said in an interview with LCN.
“The other advice I could give is that it’s winter, adapt your driving,” he adds. You really have to adapt your driving to the weather. So be careful, maybe leave earlier and make sure you have a safe trip.”
