A 71-year-old man was found dead in the flames of his apartment this Saturday, December 28, Vaucluse firefighters told France 3 Provence-Alpes.
The fire broke out around 10:30 p.m. on the ground floor of the two-story building located rue Pierre de Foix in Avignon (Vaucluse).
When help arrived, the septuagenarian was in cardio-respiratory arrest. Doctors from the mobile emergency and resuscitation service (SMUR) were unable to resuscitate him and declared him dead.
Seven other people were present in the building. They were not impacted by the fire. In total, seventeen firefighters and six vehicles were mobilized. The cause of the fire is currently unknown.
It was a rough night for the Vaucluse firefighters. Barely an hour earlier, they intervened in Orange to help a family suffering from carbon monoxide poisoning. Another fire broke out at two a.m., again in Orange, in the garage of a home. For this last intervention, no injuries were reported.
