The Rhône prefecture has triggered the orange alert in the Lyon basin, due to the pollution episode which persists. Several restrictive measures, particularly related to traffic, have been put in place in order to limit polluting emissions.
The combustion-type air pollution episode underway since the weekend continues and is increasing in the Lyon basin and Nord-Isère. The air is once again “very bad” according to the monitoring association Atmo. Saturday December 28, at the end of the day, the Rhône prefecture therefore decided to activate the orange alert in order to respond to this episode and reduce polluting emissions.
Only Crit'Air 1 and 2 stickers authorized to circulate
This alert level requires the establishment of restrictive measures, particularly in terms of traffic. Since this Sunday morning, differentiated traffic has been in place. Which means that only vehicles displaying a class 1 or 2 Crit'Air sticker can travel in the Low Emission Zone (ZFE) of the Lyon metropolitan area. Please note, however, that an exemption exists for vehicles carrying at least three people, for emergency vehicles and for taxis.

Reduced speed in the ZFE
In addition, speed is reduced throughout the department. The maximum speed increases to 70 km/h instead of 80 or 90 km/h on all roads.
In terms of measures relating to the residential sector, the use of fireplaces “open hearth” is strictly prohibited, as it has been throughout the year since April 2023. The use of wood or its derivatives as additional individual heating is also prohibited, as is the burning of waste.
Avoid physical activities
Fine particle pollution is particularly dangerous for vulnerable and sensitive people; the prefecture also gave some advice on how to protect yourself. It is therefore recommended to avoid intense physical activities, to postpone activities that require the most effort and to move away from major roads during peak periods.
