At least 151 dead
The plane, which departed from Bangkok, carried 181 people : 175 passengers and six crew members. The first assessment confirmed the death of 124 victims : a new figure published mid-morning shows at least 151 dead. Although two survivors survived the crash, Yonhap News Agency reported that most of those on board were presumed dead.
“Only the back of the device retains its shape somewhat. It is almost impossible to recognize the rest (of the plane)” Muan fire chief Lee Jung-hyun said at a press conference after the crash.
Bird, weather…
As a reminder, if the cause of the accident is still unknown, the collision between a bird and the plane and the weather conditions are among the avenues closely examined by the authorities. This tragedy is the worst experienced by a South Korean airline in almost 30 years: in 1997the crash of Korean Air Guam had caused more than 200 dead.
