Three Zimbabwean centuries trouble Afghanistan on second day of first Test
Captain Craig Ervine and Brian Bennett both made centuries on Friday as Zimbabwe racked up an impressive total of 586 runs on the second day of their opening encounter against Afghanistan at the Queens Sports Club.
Afghanistan ended the day with 95 runs for two wickets, trailing by 491, before poor light interrupted the match early.
Rahmat Shah will return to action on Saturday with 49 runs without loss, accompanied by Hashmatullah Shahidi who scored 16 runs.
Zimbabwe had already scored 363-4 on day one, with 38-year-old Sean Williams remaining unbeaten on 145, alongside Ervine on 56. However, Williams was the first player to be bowled out on Friday, tempted by a ball short and caught at 154.
Ervine reached his fourth Test century before being bowled out on 104, while Bennett finished the day with 110 runs, registering his first Test century.
AM Ghazanfar was the best bowler on the Afghan side with 3 wickets for 127 runs.
Afghanistan lost their first wicket in the second innings of their reply when debutant Trevor Gwandu removed Sediqullah Atal with a ball in his first Test over.
Zimbabwe and Afghanistan will play a second Test in Bulawayo, starting January 2.
