Bringing together works intended for young people as well as titles for an adolescent or young adult audience, the GFK ranking of best sellers of children’s books 2024 is distinguished by both its eclecticism and its great stability. This is demonstrated again this year by the podium made up of the indestructible novel for young readers. Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone of J.K. Rowling (Gallimard Jeunesse) which celebrated its 26th anniversary in 2024; A thousand kisses for a boy of Tillie Cole (The Youth Pocket Book), young adult romance whose first publication dates back to 2018; And The Kingdom of Kensuke of Michael Mopurgo (Gallimard Jeunesse), adventure story for adolescents relaunched with the release last February of its film adaptation, 24 years after its first publication in France.
Well-established reputation
Behind this leading trio, the heritage classics quickly appear The Little Prince d’Antoine de Saint-Exupéry (5eGallimard Jeunesse) and Friday and wildlife of Michael Tournier (6eGallimard Jeunesse), immediate confirmation of the department’s dependence on a fund which also counts among its star sellers two titles from the “Mortelle Adèle” series by Mr Tan (Bayard Jeunesse and Mr Tan & Co), The river upside down of Jean-Claude Mourlevat (Pocket Jeunesse) or The Fault in Our Stars of John Green (Pocket Youth).
The share of new entrants is thus reduced to the bare minimum. Tillie Cole rides on the success of A thousand kisses for a boy with its sequel A thousand pieces of broken heart (9eHachette Romans) while the album I am me and no one else of Baptiste Beaulieu (Les Arènes), published in September, managed to climb to 7e rank, again benefiting from the already well-established notoriety of its author.
