If the sporting news of 2024 has been largely punctuated by major events, like the Olympic and Paralympic Games in , the world of sport has also regretted the death of a number of emblematic figures.

Franz Beckenbauer, Rick Van Looy, Didier Roustan… whether they are legends or not, all these personalities have contributed in their own way to the influence of sport in their respective disciplines.

A look back at the significant deaths of 2024. A way to pay a final tribute to these athletes or representatives of sport.

The main deaths in the world of sport in October-November-December 2024

  • December 25: Pascal Hervé (60 years old), former French cyclist and ex-teammate of Richard Virenque. He ended his career at the age of 37 after a positive test at the 2001 Tour of Italy.
  • December 23: Sophie Hediger (26 years old), Swiss snowboarder who won two World Cup podiums and participated in the 2022 Olympics. She died in an avalanche.
  • December 17: Rik Van Looy (90 years old), Belgian cyclist, double world champion and winner of all monuments in the 1950s-1960s.
  • December 2: Helmuth Duckadam (65), Romanian goalkeeper, winner of the European Champion Clubs’ Cup (formerly Champions League) in 1986 with Steaua Bucharest.
  • November 15: Bela Karolyi (82 years old), Romanian coach of Nadia Comaneci when she became Olympic champion in 1976.
  • October 25: Zé Carlos (56 years old), Brazilian footballer, 1998 world vice-champion with the Seleçao.
  • October 20: Georges Aillères (89 years old), figure of the French rugby league team of the 1960s.
  • October 17: Emile Daems (86 years old), Belgian cyclist, winner of Paris- in 1963.
  • October 7: Frédéric Baudry (47 years old), French motorcycle pilot.
  • October 6: Johan Neeskens (73 years old), Dutch footballer, three-time winner of European Cups with Ajax (1971, 1972, 1973), two-time World Cup finalist (1974, 1978)
  • October 6: Kipyegon Bett (26 years old), Kenyan athlete, bronze medalist in the 800m at the 2007 World Championships in London.

  • September 30: Dikembe Mutombo (58 years old), Congolese basketball player inducted into the NBA Hall of Fame, eight times All-Star in the 1990s and 2000s.
  • September 23: Thadée Polak (92 years old), French footballer, winner of the Coupe de in 1961 with Sedan and 1964 with OL.
  • September 18: Toto Schillaci (59 years old), Italian footballer, top scorer in the 1990 World Cup.
  • September 16: Gary Shaw (63), English footballer who won the Champion Clubs’ Cup in 1982 with Aston Villa.
  • September 11: Didier Roustan (66 years old), French journalist for several media including L’Équipe, former voice of Téléfoot.
  • September 5: Rebecca Cheptegei (33 years old), Ugandan marathon runner.
  • August 26 : Sven-Goran Eriksson (76 years old), Swedish coach, first foreign coach of the England football team, from 2001 to 2006.
  • August 22: Peter Lundgren (59), Swedish tennis player who became coach of Roger Federer.
  • July 14: Sylvain Saudan (87 years old), Swiss skier, pioneer of extreme skiing.

  • June 30: Eric Poujade (51 years old), French gymnast, double European champion (1998) and Olympic vice-champion in Sydney (2000).
  • June 18: Willie Mays (93 years old), American baseball icon, legend of the San Francisco Giants.
  • June 17: Jean-Pierre Hureau (91 years old), French leader, emblematic president of between 1979 and 2000.
  • June 12: Jerry West (86 years old), American basketball player, NBA champion in 1972 with the Lakers, who served as the model for the official logo of the league.
  • May 13: Lucien Mias (93 years old), captain of the XV of France during the tour to South Africa in 1958.
  • May 5: César Luis Menotti (85 years old), Argentine coach, coach of the Albiceleste, world champion in 1978.
  • 10 avril : OJ Simpson (76), American football star, acquitted in the “trial of the century” for the murder of his ex-wife in 1995.
  • 8 avril : André Boniface (89 years old), French rugby legend, winner of four Five Nations Tournaments.
  • 8 avril : Nicolas Holveck (52 years old), French manager of AS (2023-2024), Stade Rennais (2020-2022) and AS Monaco (2014-2020).

  • 19 mars : Joe Barone (57), Italian executive, general manager of the Fiorentina football team.
  • 18 mars : Kenjiro Shinozuka (75 years old), first Japanese driver to win the Paris-Dakar, in 1997.
  • February 22: Artur Jorge (78 years old), Portuguese coach, winner of the European Champion Clubs’ Cup with Porto in 1987 and coach of PSG from 1991 to 1994.
  • February 20: Andreas Brehme (63 years old), German defender, 1990 world champion.
  • February 11: Kelvin Kiptum (24 years old), Kenyan athlete, holder of the marathon world record (2h 00 min and 35 sec).

  • February 1: Michel Jazy (87 years old), French athlete, double European champion and Olympic vice-champion over 1,500 meters in 1960.
  • January 22: Gigi Riva (79 years old), Italian footballer, top scorer in the history of the Nazionale, winner of Euro-1968 and finalist of the 1970 World Cup
  • January 18: Jean-Michel Barrault (96 years old), French journalist co-founder of Solitaire du Figaro.
  • January 7: Franz Beckenbauer (78 years old), German footballer, legend of Bayern Munich, three-time winner of European Cups (1974, 1975, 1976) and world champion as a player (1974) then coach (1990)
  • January 5: Mario Zagallo (92 years old), Brazilian footballer, quadruple world champion, as a player (1958, 1962) then as a coach (1970, 1994).
