Change of program for François Bayrou and the five ministers traveling alongside him to go to Mayotte. Originally planned to stopover in this Sunday, December 29, 2024, they will ultimately go directly to the island this Monday, December 30. The Prime Minister will arrive in Mayotte on Monday for a visit focused on “concrete solutions” for the inhabitants of the department devastated by Cyclone Chido.

François Bayrou will fly Sunday evening to Mayotte where he will spend the day Monday, before going in the evening to Reunion, an important logistics base, where he will continue his visit on Tuesday.

He will be accompanied by Ministers of State Élisabeth Borne (Education) and Manuel Valls (Overseas), Ministers Valérie Létard (Housing) and Yannick Neuder (Health) and Minister Delegate and former senator from Mayotte Thani Mohamed Soilihi (Francophonie and International partnerships).

Their visit to Mayotte comes around ten days after Emmanuel Macron’s stormy trip, and while François Bayrou had been strongly criticized for his absence there.

– In Mayotte to provide “concrete solutions” –

François Bayrou is going to Mayotte “with the desire to provide concrete solutions to the populations there on issues of education, health, housing”. And “with his experience as a local elected official, who knows how to provide concrete, and above all rapid, responses to meet the needs of both the Mahoraises and the Mahorais”, explains those around him.

Friday, in an open letter, the boss of the Socialist Party Olivier Faure demanded “acts” for Mayotte from the Prime Minister, whom he also criticizes for not having gone “immediately” to the site, for having announced the composition of his government on the day of national mourning last Monday and to have “seemed to seek to relativize the importance of the catastrophe”.

“The debris continues to pile up, raising fears of health risks, water and food remain rationed, electricity is cut off for half of the population in the northwest of the island and in the razed shanty towns, the residents feel abandoned and are waiting for help,” wrote the first secretary of the PS, who also questions the head of government about “the work of censusing deceased people.”

The human toll from Cyclone Chido stands at 39 dead and more than 4,000 injured, according to a new count published Tuesday by the prefect of Mayotte.
