Alpine skiing – Sensation Alexis Monney wins the Bormio downhill – Sports Infos – Ski

The Swiss team crushes the race

The day after Cyprien Sarrazin’s serious fall, we were a little worried, like everyone before the start of this descent from Bormio, but in the end everything went perfectly for the first 30 bibs.

Big favorite of this race Marco Odermatt has for once left the spotlight to his young teammates. The World Cup leader, who saw his airbag burst during the race, could not do better than 5th place, a feat in his conditions.

The hero of the day, it’s a huge and beautiful surprise, is called Alexis Monney. Former junior world champion (2020), full of talent, the Friborg skier will achieve a dream descent.

Starting with bib 19, without pressure, Monney achieved the run of his life. Absolutely perfect on this terrible Stelvio, he has claimed his first career success while smashing his best performance, an 8th place in Kitzbuehel last year.

Under the eyes of a hilarious and happy Odermatt for his friends, Alexis Monney, 24, does the hair of Franjo Von Allmen, 22, who until then was a solid leader.

A huge downhiller, Von Allmen had already taken 2nd place in the Val Gardena descent, not really the same track profile, and confirms his enormous potential. This boy has all the qualities to become the next king of the discipline.

Switzerland, already victorious in the descents of Beaver Creek with Murisier, and Val Gardena, with Odermatt, offers itself an unexpected double and places four skiers in the Top 6 thanks to Justin Murisier’s 6th place.

To enhance the performance, Marco Kohler, bib 30, comes to get 9th place.

Cameron Alexander on the podium

Very comfortable on the training descents, the Canadian Alexander confirmed in the race by taking a superb 3rd place, 0.72sec from Monney. As in 2023, he reached the podium in Bormio and achieved his 4th top 3 in his career.

Local Mattia Casse, in great form, once again finished among the best with his 4th place at 0.79sec, 0.01sec ahead of Odermatt and 0.02sec ahead of Murisier.

Nils Allègre, who had sharply criticized the organizers and the FIS yesterday following the fall of Cyprien Sarrazin, was able to refocus to take 10th place, that of the best Tricolore.

Nils Alphand, with his bib 25, also achieved a stellar performance by finishing 14th, a little worse than his 9th place last season, which remains his best career ranking to this day.
