As soon as parliamentary work resumes in Ottawa, the Conservatives will table a motion of censure to overthrow Justin Trudeau’s government. The Conservatives announced their intentions in this regard on Friday morning in a press release.

Updated yesterday at 10:11 a.m.

This is an important first step that could speed up the holding of a federal election. “After 9 years, Justin Trudeau has completely lost control and is desperately clinging to power,” criticize the conservatives.

“Canadians need an election now and deserve a strong Conservative government, led by a Prime Minister who has the intelligence and courage to clean up the Justin Trudeau disaster and guide Canada through the challenges ahead,” they added. -they.

The Conservatives directly challenge the elected officials of the New Democratic Party (NDP), indicating that they now offer them “the first opportunity to overthrow the Liberal government and force the holding of elections.”

“That’s enough. It’s time for the leader of the NDP to live up to his own words, to put his country before his pension and to vote for censure in the Liberal government so that Canadians can finally have elections which they desperately need,” says the party.

Work will resume on Monday January 27. The Conservatives will propose a motion stating that the “House does not have confidence in the Prime Minister and the government,” it is revealed. Once this motion is adopted, it will be sent to the House of Commons. All MPs will be able to vote on the motion on January 30.

So far, the Trudeau government has survived three Conservative motions of censure, the last filed at the beginning of December. This motion received the support of the Bloc Québécois.

The Bloc could well support this new Conservative motion. In an end-of-year review interview with The Pressleader Yves-François Blanchet made a plea for federal elections in the first months of 2025. This is, according to him, the only possible way out of the crisis.

If the New Democratic Party (NDP) opposed the previous motion, this time could be the right one. In the days before Christmas, leader Jagmeet Singh announced that he would join the Conservatives and the Bloc Québécois at the “first opportunity” to bring about the fall of the government.

“Justin Trudeau has failed in the most important task of a prime minister: working for the people and not for the most powerful. The Liberals do not deserve another chance. This is why the NDP will vote to bring down this government and give the Canadian population the opportunity to vote for a government that will work for you,” Mr. Singh said in a publication.

To govern, the Canadian Prime Minister must have the confidence of the majority of MPs in the House of Commons. This confidence can be tested by the motion of censure. To win the vote of confidence, the government must obtain a simple majority among the 338 deputies.

Once adopted, the government cannot ignore the motion of censure. The Prime Minister must therefore go to the Governor General, present his resignation, then dissolve Parliament. An electoral campaign, lasting a minimum of 36 days, follows.

Conservative leader Pierre Poliievre would have liked parliamentary work to resume as quickly as possible to launch his motion of censure. He sent a letter to the Governor General of Canada, Mary Simon, to file a request to this effect. His request, however, would not hold water constitutionally, according to various experts.
