Eriks Mateiko scored the only goal in a long shootout session to give Latvia an unexpected 3-2 victory over Canada on Friday in Ottawa at the World Junior Hockey Championship.

Finland recovers against Germany
After being shut out 4-0 by Canada on Thursday, Finland bounced back with a 3-1 victory over Germany.
Emil Pieniniemi, Arttu Alasiurua and Jesse Kiiskinen found the back of the net for Finland, which outshot 43-32.
Clemens Sager scored the only goal for Germany, which had lost 10-4 the day before to the defending champions, the United States.
Finland led 1-0 after 20 minutes of play and 2-1 after 40 minutes.
German goalkeeper Linus Vieillard stopped 40 of the 42 shots aimed at him, while his opposite number Petteri Rimpinen blocked 31 shots.
The two teams will play their next match on Sunday. Finland will face the United States and Germany has a meeting with Canada.
Slovakia at the end of the suspense
Slovakia also redeemed itself after its 5-2 defeat suffered the day before against Sweden by beating Switzerland 2-1.
Jan Chovan scored with 3:18 left in the third period to break a 1-1 tie and lead the Slovaks to victory.
Daniel Jencko also made the red light shine for Slovakia.
Eric Schneller scored the only goal for Switzerland, which has still not won in the tournament. She had lost 5-1 the day before against the Czech Republic.
Both teams directed 29 shots toward the opposing net.
The two teams will play again on Sunday. Slovakia will face Czechia and Switzerland will face Sweden.

The Kazakhs powerless before the Swedes
Anton Wahlberg scored twice and Sweden crushed Kazakhstan 8-1.
Victor Eklund, David Edstrom, Linus Eriksson, Felix Nilsson, Oskar Vuollet and David Granberg also moved the ropes for the Swedes, who improved their record to 2-0 after a 10-4 victory against Germany the day before.
Viggo Gustafsson and Jeb Forsfjall each had two assists in the victory.
Artur Gross scored the only goal for Kazakhstan, which was outshot 52-16.
Sweden led 5-0 after 20 minutes of play and 6-1 after two periods.
Kazakhstan will play its second match of the competition on Saturday, against Czechia.
