The Davos residents celebrate Calle Andersson’s opener.

Good reaction from HC Davos to the Spengler Cup. The day after the slap received against Team Canada on the occasion of its entry into the running in “its” tournament, the Graubünden team showed a much better face against the Germans of Straubing (0-5 success), Friday evening, in its Eisstadion ice rink. Thanks in particular to a final period of fire.

To get the three points and come back to life in the Cattini group, the team coached by Josh Holden tightened its back lines in front of an excellent Luca Hollenstein (author of a shutout), established in the HCD cage in place of a Sandro Aeschlimann beaten six times the day before.

Andersson unlocks the match

Despite several dangerous chances to be credited to both the “Rekordmeister” and the Tigers, the score did not change for many minutes. The public at the Davos cathedral ultimately had to wait until mid-match to finally celebrate a success. But what a success!

Calle Andersson (28th, 0-1), arrived in Graubünden during the season from HC Lugano, placed the puck in the German top corner with a wrist shot that was as powerful as it was precise. There was absolutely nothing to do on this occasion for the goalkeeper Zane McIntyre, totally masked on this attempt by the son of Peter, the assistant coach of Lausanne HC.

Four goals in the third period

The goal from safety for Josh Holden’s men fell less than a quarter of an hour from the end of the match. Yannick Frehner made a big acceleration at the entrance to the offensive zone, before serving Adam Tambellini on a plate (47th, 0-2). The Canadian attacker then did not need to be asked to place the puck in the right place. At the end of the game, Tino Kessler (52nd, 0-3), Yannick Frehner (54th, 0-4) and Brendan Lemieux (56th, 0-5) further added to the bill.

Despite this victory, and due to the big defeat suffered during its first match, HC Davos has little chance of going directly into the last four of the competition. The Grisons should therefore be on deck on Sunday, for a quarter-final against the second or third in the Torriani group.
