A new scandal of violence is splashing the American prison system after the broadcast on Friday of videos showing the last hours of Robert Brooks, a 43-year-old African-American inmate, violently attacked by prison officers in the Marcy Correctional prison north of the State of New York. The images, captured by the cameras worn by the guards but devoid of sound, reveal a particularly brutal scene.
Robert Brooks, his face bloodied, is seen subdued on an infirmary bed, surrounded by at least six agents. Several blows are delivered to him while he is held on the ground and firmly grabbed by the neck several times. In a chilling sequence, the detainee, already handcuffed and visibly injured, is grabbed by the collar by an officer donning a plastic glove. With the help of a colleague, the man violently throws him against a wall.
