The Russian Foreign Ministry announced that Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Thailand, Uganda and Uzbekistan will join BRICS as “partner states” of here 2025.

In a written statement shared on Friday, the Russian Foreign Ministry recalled that an agreement was reached at the BRICS summit held in October in Kazan on the creation of a common state status within the Union.

Accordingly, the statement highlights that Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Thailand, Uganda and Uzbekistan have approved membership in BRICS as a “partner state” from 2025, and that four other countries have been invited to participate in this same status.

“We plan to establish close cooperation with partner countries so that they can participate as effectively as possible in cooperation within the Union,” the statement said, adding that Brazil, which chairs BRICS 2025, will the corresponding announcement if the four countries agree.

The acronym “BRIC”, which did not originally include South Africa, entered the literature in 2001 when British economist Jim O'Neill used it in an article highlighting the growth potential from Brazil, Russia, India and China.

The association was founded in 2009 at the initiative of Russia. It is an informal platform intended to counterbalance the global domination of the United States and Western countries. With South Africa's invitation a year later, the alliance was renamed BRICS.

The BRICS, whose founding members are Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, expanded with the accession of Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran and the United Arab Emirates.

The BRICS, whose total number of members increased to 9 with the accession of new countries this year, occupy an important place in the world economy.
