A man with autism, kept reclusive by his mother for 32 years, is found dead in a house in La Trinité

The story is incredible. A horror scene was discovered in a house in the Plaisable district of La Trinité. On Sunday, December 22, a man with autism was found dead next to his feces. According to initial reports, he had lived like an animal for 32 years, tied up and kept reclusive by his mother, an octogenarian.

The story is dramatic and macabre. It takes place in a home in La Trinité, in the Plaisable district. On Sunday (December 22), authorities found the lifeless body of a man in his forties. Suffering from autism, he was kept reclusive by his mother for 32 years.

The abused man was chained and bathed in his own excrement. Neighbors say they have already heard him scream.

This tragic event calls out. Since this discovery, desolation has reigned in the district located in the countryside of the Northern commune. According to the testimonies collected, the neighbors were partly aware of the victim’s living conditions. This is the case of this resident:

It’s really sad for this child. This child has been a prisoner for a while. Everyone in the neighborhood had known about it for twenty years. He didn’t come out at all. He was locked in a room. His father came to pick him up to spend the weekends with him. His father died a while ago. It’s been a while since the child came out of the room. He didn’t have a tooth in his mouth. I don’t think he was well cared for. (…) Her ex-husband called the social worker, but I don’t know what happened. Everyone is shocked. The child was found with blood coming from his nose and ear.

A neighbor of the victim, from the Plaisable district, in La Trinité

This neighborhood neighbor hadn’t seen him for several years.

It made me sad because it had been a long time since I had seen the child. I saw him with his dad coming down and after that, nothing at all. I saw him when he was little. He was going to his dad’s house. He took her to her mother. That’s all. It’s been years since I’ve seen him. (…) When he was little, he went to the doctor. Since he has been living with his mother, he no longer goes there.

Same story for this Trinidad who also saw him when he was younger.

It’s sad because the mother has been suffering with this disabled child for a long time. I have known the child since he was little. When he was little, he went to the center for disabled people. When I went up to the back of the neighborhood, I heard him screaming. He’s disabled, that’s what he did. I don’t know if he was locked up. I just know that this is a child who was disabled, who didn’t speak, who screamed and was agitated, who banged his head everywhere.

The mother’s ex-husband did not expect to learn of Willy’s death. He took care of him until he was about 20 years old.

When I heard that Willy died, it shook me because he was like a son to me. When I met him, he must have been 8 years old. I took care of him, I showered him. He had to be carefully monitored in terms of his behavior. He often banged his head on the walls. (…) I took walks with him to get him out. (…) He did not speak, only with gestures. Willy was going to the former Civil Hospital.

Patricia Telle, the mayor of the town, indicates that the municipal social service was not aware of the situation of this family.

It is a human drama, probably a tragedy of poverty. I was so surprised by this information when I heard it. I find it hard to think that in 2024, we could have families who are still in such a situation of solitude, of isolation. (…) I think it is important that the services concerned do their jobs and then that we know what happened. At first glance, I say that it is a social drama. (…) We have a social service with a social worker at the CCAS, a Family and Parenting Center, so it is really a big surprise to discover that in the territory there is such a situation.

Patricia Telle, Mayor of Trinidad

The investigation is still ongoing.
