On December 17, a “fire start” exercise was set up at the Château des Cheminières, in Castelnaudary. Despite a busy week with Christmas activities in the Danjou Quarter, the date for the start of this exercise was voluntarily chosen by the chain of command during a period when attention was relaxed.

Kept secret by the second in command, Lieutenant-Colonel François and Commander Julien (reservist) fire officer among the strong heads, this type of exercise makes it possible to control the regiment’s alert chain but also the intervention of Captain Thibaud’s Castelnaudary firefighters. The scenario set up with the support of Mr Christophe “ex-soldier, ex-firefighter and defense civilian in the first aid unit of 4” stuck as close as possible to reality. A fire broke out in the basement of the Château des Cheminières with the release of thick smoke.
The alert was given on Tuesday, December 17 at 8:10 a.m. and the entire duty chain reacted in cascade until the firefighters were received and guided. An exercise which gained momentum with the discovery in the basement of a victim (faced for the occasion) in a state of shock and who had serious burns on his body and face. Going to the end of their intervention procedure, the firefighters deployed their large ladder next to the century-old trees.

Supervised by Commander Julien, everything is noted in detail by the responders, firefighters and legionnaires. In order to grow from this “obligatory” annual exercise, a detailed and reasoned report of photos will follow which will feed the hierarchy. In the meantime, the “hot debriefing” took place in order to dissect the reaction of all those involved and remind us of the procedures in force. Several areas for improvement identified will be the subject of measures to be taken immediately.
