The Departmental Council, a major player in local solidarity, is strengthening its action in favor of the most vulnerable groups. Fairer aid for gas
Assistance for the acquisition of gas bottles is currently based on a regional system which uniformly subsidizes all households, regardless of their income. Since 2022, the Department of Reunion has made an exceptional contribution to this regional system. Initially planned for five months, this aid was extended four times over two and a half years.
This model does not meet the requirement of fairness. The Departmental Council is developing a complementary, better targeted system to ensure that public efforts primarily benefit the poorest families.
Unique departmental support in social and housing matters
The Departmental Council remains the reference community today with a continued commitment to social assistance, while taking responsibility, alone and fully, for measures such as improving housing. This program, essential to combat poverty, including energy poverty, and improve the living conditions of households, previously benefited from regional co-financing.
Since then, the Region has disengaged from the system. It currently relies solely on departmental resources. Despite this disengagement from the Region, the department continues its efforts to support families in their renovation work and guarantee safer and more comfortable housing.
This dual commitment, both in social support and in improving housing conditions, illustrates the Departmental Council’s desire to respond effectively to the essential needs of residents, while optimizing public resources.
