A flaw that only affects manual installations

The problem is limited to manually created installation media. PCs that received October or November updates via Windows Update or the Microsoft Update Catalog site are not affected. A distinction highlighting the importance of official update channels.

Microsoft detailed the issue on its Windows 11 known issues page (version 24H2). The company explains that devices installed with these faulty media “may remain in a state where they will not be able to accept further Windows security updates“.

Potentially serious consequences for security

The inability to receive future security updates represents a major risk to affected systems. Without these essential patches, PCs become vulnerable to new threats and exploits discovered after their initial installation.

A temporary solution while waiting for a permanent fix

To resolve this issue, Microsoft recommends:

1. recreate the installation media including the December 2024 update (published on December 10) ;
2. reinstall Windows 11 from these new media.

The company is currently working on a permanent solution, but it has not communicated a precise date for its deployment.

Other bugs affect Windows 11 24H2
