It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Burt, the iconic saltwater crocodile and star of the Australian classic Mr. Crocodile Dundee'. Burt passed away peacefully over the weekend, with an estimated age of over 90, marking the end of an incredible era“. This is the statement published via social media with which the Crocosaurus Cove in Darwina reptile aquarium where “Burt” had lived since 2008, confirmed the news of the beloved crocodile's passing.

Movie star

“Burt” after the 1986 film by Peter Faimanplayed by Paul Hogan in the role of Michael J. Mick Dundee e Linda Kozlowskihad become a very real star loved by children even though it wasn't really a pet. The success was such that Burt was also reconfirmed for the sequels: “Mr. Crocodile Dundee 2” (1988) e “Crocodile Dundee 3” (2000). To him the great merit of “having brought closer” and made, in the collective imagination, less frightening, a species like that of crocodiles.

A true “conqueror”

The operators of the center where Burt lived told the story of this very particular animal. Burt had been captured in the 1980s Reynolds Riverin the Northern Territory of Australia. “He was an animal with a 'bold' personality, a 'confirmed bachelor', an attitude that was noticed during his first years on a crocodile farm” explains the wildlife center.

The operators then recount some amusing episodes: “His fiery temperament earned him the respect of his keepers and visitors, as he embodied the raw, indomitable spirit of the saltwater crocodile. Burt was truly one of a kind. It wasn't just a crocodile, it was a force of nature that reminds us of the power and majesty of these incredible creatures. While his personality could be challenging, it was also what made him so memorable and loved by those who worked with him and the thousands of people who visited him over the years“.

An animal that is never forgotten

There were many who went to the center to see him. “Visitors from around the world have marveled at its impressive size and commanding presence, especially at feeding time” the center's managers then conclude.

A very long life

Ninety years is a long time for an animal like the crocodile, even if not

It is unusual for these saltwater animals to live past the age of 70, especially in captivity. Burt also represents a rarity for his longevity. He will be remembered with a commemorative sign at the park entrance.
